Time has gotten away from me!

It’s been 3 weeks since I’ve written anything, so much for staying on top of this. New month resolution – blog more! March has been a busy month- between school, a fast moving baby, and starting a new job adventure; I’m pooped! A couple weeks ago I became a consultant for Diaper Parties. I decided it was time to take my fluffy butt addiction to the next level, and try to make some money from it. I am so excited to be able to spread the word about cloth diapering, baby wearing, and natural parenting products! Right now my big goal is to get my name out there so I can start doing consultations and parties. I’ve been working daily at finding new ways to reach people so hopefully my business will start growing soon! We have been busy with visitors and visiting others. This has been our first free weekend all month! Yesterday we took Piglet downtown to see the Easter bunny, and took Ali for a hike on one of our favorite local trails. Today we are laying low with a venture to the park so Piglet could try out the swings. Yay for warmer weather!

A Budget Friendly, DIY nursery.

When it came to creating Piglet’s nursery I had a few goals in mind.

1) I wanted it to be gender neutral

2) I didn’t want it to cost a lot of money

3) I wanted there to be parts that were meaningful to us

I didn’t want to be overly “themey” but there are a few themes going on. There are elements of woodland, circles, and alphabet. The woodland and alphabet parts are representative of the mister and I. The circles ended up being a coincidental theme.

I think it is important to first share what we started with, this is a picture that we took during the inspection of our house before we bought it. This is actually our biggest bedroom but because you have to walk through it to get to the third upstairs bedroom, it doesn’t make an ideal master, it’s the perfect nursery though!

I didn’t want to be painting or doing a lot of work on the nursery while I was pregnant so before we even started trying to conceive, we painted, and hired someone to replace the flooring. We have some gorgeous hardwood in our house that we didn’t want to try and match so we chose a dark, wider, floating floor. I chose neutral colors that weren’t overly baby so it can be something to grow with – the green is actually leftover paint from our dining room!

The crib is the only new piece of furniture in the nursery. The rug is also a new purchase from Target, I fell in love with the bright colors! The fabric from the crib skirt and window valences are both shower curtains from Target! $24 gave me enough fabric for the crib skirt, two valences, reupholstering the rocking chair (that you will see soon) and I have fabric left for future projects! The canvas is a piece that I painted, inspired by something I found on Pinterest. The mobile I made with an embroidery hoop, a little bit of ribbon, and little wooden circles that I painted.

The side table belonged to my grandparents, I inherited it after my grandmother moved into a nursing home. Bonus: check out the circles on the side! I had created similar peekaboo prints for a friend with multicolored owls. The Mister asked me if I was going to make some for OUR nursery, so I decided to use black bears as a nod to the college that DH and I attended with bright background colors. This is one of my favorite elements, it is one of a kind art.

My dad created the bookshelf with gorgeous detail on the side. The little rocking chair belonged to my dad, I also used it as a toddler, I am so glad that it is something that Piglet will get to use as well!

This is my nursing station! The chair belonged to my great grandmother, it was in my nursery, again a piece that I am so glad to share with Piglet! I removed the white floral fabric that my parents had used, and recovered it with my modern shower curtain fabric. I am so happy with the results. The table was another piece that belonged to my grandmother – not a piece I would have normally picked out but the size works perfectly for this area.

To save money I did not get a separate changing table. I had this long, low dresser that fits a changing pad on top, plus some space for baskets that have all of the essentials in. The mobile is similar to the one above the crib, I made this one two tiered with a mixture of small and large circles.

Cloth diapers! I will have a separate post that goes into more detail about cloth diapering and all the reasons that I love it!

My favorite project took 38 weeks of my pregnancy to complete. I don’t believe in the sets that you buy because they are wicked expensive and because of recommendations (no blanket in the crib, no bumper) I think it is a waste of money. I decided to create a quilt to match our theme, something that could be used for a longer period of time, and something that Piglet will hopefully cherish when he is older. The border is the only part of this dress that was done by machine, all other parts were hand sewn. Time consuming is an understatement but I am 100% in love with the result. It encompasses all the elements of our nursery including hand quilted circles! It isn’t perfect but it was made with lots of love.

His own two feet

Holy Cannoli does time ever fly when you have kids. In the last month Stinker Pants has decided that he doesn’t want to sit, and crawling isn’t good enough either. He wants to STAND and stand he does! He gets himself standing using anything, the couch, the coffee table, the wall, his ball popper. His favorite place to stand though is the dining room, he loves our counter height chairs, they are the perfect height to hold for support. Part of my heart breaks to see him standing because it means we aren’t too far away from those first steps which means MORE independence from Mama. It is still exciting to see him grow, develop, and become his own person. I can’t wait to see him develop more of his own personality, and interests! Image

Twitter

I have finally done it, I have entered the world of Twitter. I have avoided it for a really long time, I feel like I get enough updates from Facebook. However, I have started following a number of other blogs that offer FANTASTIC giveaways and being Twitterless, I was missing out on an extra entry opportunity. So here I am MamaMelH . Follow it, love it – you know you want to!

An important anniversary

Two years ago today, we went to a local shelter to look for a dog. Instead, we came home with a three month old puppy. We chose her because she looked like the puppy version of a dog that the Mister’s family had. A couple weeks in we were losing our mind between potty training, and middle of the night crying. I forced the Mister to stick with it, because there was no way I was going to bring this dog back, I knew she could grow into a great dog. Now there are times that she annoys the bejeezus out of me, but she is a part of our growing family and a part that I can’t imagine living without. Happy 2 year adoption anniversary to our chow hound. Image

Menu Plan

I’m going to jump into this with an easy, non threatening first post. I began menu planning a couple years ago. I started doing it for a few reasons: 1) I never have to wonder what is for dinner. 2) I can go grocery shopping once a week and get everything that I need for the week. 3) It saves money because I go in with my list of what I need and don’t load up the cart with “extras”.
This year I have started writing down our meals on a calendar, my goal is to not repeat a meal during a month. Pinterest has me anxious to try new things, this is one way to help me do so!

We still have somewhat of a routine to the things we eat in a week. I try to have at least one night with a beef dish, one night with chicken, and one meatless entree. I usually will have a pasta, and something Mexican. I have 7 nights of meals listed but they pretty much never stay in that order. I hope to start sharing recipes soon!

Night 1 – (Crockpot) Honey Sesame Chicken Legs with Rice

Night 2 – Stuffed pepper soup

Night 3 – Monterey Chicken

Night 4 – Chop Suey

Night 5 – Leftovers

Night 6 – Chipotle Chicken Tacos

Night 7 РSpinach and Red Pepper Frittata
